Background of the Study
Digital narratives in Nigeria are rapidly evolving due to the widespread use of instant messaging platforms such as WhatsApp. This study examines syntactic variation within WhatsApp group chats, which serve as informal spaces for narrative construction and social interaction. The flexible and dynamic nature of digital communication encourages users to deviate from standard syntactic norms, leading to innovative sentence structures and shorthand expressions (Olu, 2023). These variations often reflect cultural influences, linguistic creativity, and the need for brevity in fast-paced exchanges. By analyzing chat logs, the research aims to identify patterns of syntactic innovation—such as ellipsis, fragmented sentences, and non-standard punctuation—and assess how these affect clarity and meaning. Moreover, the study explores the relationship between syntactic creativity and identity formation in online communities, contributing to broader discussions on language change in digital environments (Ibrahim, 2024). Findings from this study are expected to inform linguistic theory on digital communication and provide practical insights for enhancing digital literacy in Nigeria (Olu, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing significance of digital communication, there is limited research on the syntactic variations present in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats. Current studies have focused primarily on lexical innovations and emoticon usage, neglecting the structural aspects of digital narratives. This gap restricts our understanding of how informal online communication affects language use and clarity. Ambiguities arising from non-standard syntactic constructions can lead to misinterpretation and communication breakdown. Addressing this gap is crucial for developing strategies to improve digital literacy and ensure effective communication in online group settings (Ibrahim, 2024; Olu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify common syntactic variations in WhatsApp group chats.

  2. To assess the impact of these variations on message clarity.

  3. To provide recommendations for enhancing digital narrative communication.

Research Questions

  1. What syntactic variations are prevalent in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats?

  2. How do these variations affect the clarity of digital narratives?

  3. What strategies can improve syntactic consistency in online communication?

Significance of the Study
This study provides crucial insights into syntactic variation in digital communication, highlighting its impact on clarity and social interaction in Nigerian WhatsApp groups. The findings will benefit linguists, educators, and digital communication experts by informing practices that enhance effective online discourse. Understanding these variations contributes to broader research on language change in digital environments (Olu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to syntactic variations in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats and does not consider other digital communication platforms.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Syntactic Variation: Differences in sentence structure and grammatical constructions.

  2. Digital Narratives: Stories and conversations constructed through digital media.

  3. WhatsApp Group Chats: Online discussion forums within the WhatsApp messaging platform.
